The Energy + Infrastructure Research Interest Group invites faculty from across Grounds to its next session on Tuesday, March 24 at noon. This session will offer an opportunity for faculty to engage with emerging ideas in renewable energy innovation and to connect with colleagues interested in advancing energy resilience, regional infrastructure, and technology development. The meeting will be held via Zoom.

The session will feature Eric Loth, Rolls‑Royce Commonwealth Professor of Engineering, who will lead a discussion on next‑generation floating wind turbines (especially off the cost of Virginia) and the potential for compressed air energy storage within abandoned coal mines (especially in the southwest mountains of Virginia). His work explores the intersection of fluid dynamics, energy systems, and regional geologic conditions to chart practical pathways for integrating renewable energy into Virginia’s grid portfolio.

A Research Interest Group (RIG) is a faculty‑driven community that brings colleagues together around shared themes to spark collaboration, surface new research opportunities, and build interdisciplinary connections that strengthen UVA’s collective capacity. Faculty are warmly invited to participate in the monthly discussions and help shape emerging ideas, partnerships, and projects.
