The AI + Environment Research Interest Group (RIG) invites faculty from across Grounds to its next session on Friday, February 27 at 1:00 PM. This session, hosted on Zoom, offers an opportunity to engage with innovative approaches and connect with colleagues interested in advancing climate resilience, environmental data science, and AI‑enabled modeling.
The session will feature Antonios Mamalakis, whose research integrates hydrology, climate science, and explainable artificial intelligence (xAI) to improve understanding and prediction of precipitation variability and extreme events in a changing climate. His work leverages machine learning, physical insights, and interpretable modeling approaches to identify the drivers of extreme events and support more transparent, trustworthy decision‑making for climate resilience. Professor Mamalakis will share recent advances from his group’s work, highlighting how xAI techniques can help us trust AI predictions, reveal the mechanisms behind flood risk, and help communities, planners, and policymakers better anticipate and prepare for future hazards.
A Research Interest Group (RIG) is a faculty‑driven community that brings colleagues together around shared themes to spark collaboration, surface new research opportunities, and build interdisciplinary connections that strengthen UVA’s collective capacity. Faculty are warmly invited to participate in the monthly discussions and help shape emerging ideas, partnerships, and projects.
