Public‑facing scholarship can differentiate a post-doc on the job market, as it illustrates an ability to translate academic research into publicly accessible formats. Op‑ed writing is one of the most effective ways to do public‑facing scholarship. Op-eds are a means of contributing to ongoing debates and issues with a unique perspective. By mastering op-ed writing, researchers can bring their work into public conversations, increase awareness of the issues they study, and highlight why it matters now. Op‑eds can also broaden a professional network by attracting collaborators, media inquiries, and invitations to panels or speaking engagements.
This workshop will guide Climate Fellows as they define their identity/identities, understand what editors want in an op-ed, craft compelling hooks, and develop persuasive narratives.
The workshop will be led by Pulitzer Prize-winning EI Practitioner Fellow, Chris Mooney. Mooney has over 15 years of science communication and journalism expertise.
EI post-docs are encouraged to come and learn how to transform expertise into commentary that informs, influences, and inspires. Through this workshop, participants will learn not only to participate in public discourse but to shape it.
No registration required. Lunch will be provided.
This event will be held at the UVA Environmental Institute offices on the Downtown Mall of Charlottesville.
