The AI + Environment Research Interest Group (RIG) invites faculty from across Grounds to its next session on Monday, March 24 at 1:30 PM. Hosted on Zoom, this session provides an opportunity to engage with colleagues around emerging environmental challenges at the intersection of data, infrastructure, and sustainability, and to explore new directions for interdisciplinary collaboration.
The session will be hosted by Jess Reia and will focus on the rapid rise of data centers in South America. The discussion will examine the drivers behind this expansion, including global demand for cloud computing and AI, as well as the environmental, energy, and governance implications for the region. Particular attention will be given to how data center development intersects with water use, electricity systems, climate vulnerability, and local communities, raising important questions about sustainability, resilience, and equitable development in a warming world.
A Research Interest Group (RIG) is a faculty‑driven community that brings colleagues together around shared themes to spark collaboration, surface new research opportunities, and build interdisciplinary connections that strengthen UVA’s collective capacity. Faculty are warmly invited to participate in the monthly discussions and help shape emerging ideas, partnerships, and projects.
