The UVA Environmental Institute announced the launch of its new website, the Virginia Climate Restoration Initiative. This is a dynamic digital platform designed to accelerate research, collaboration, and real-world action on carbon pollution and its impact on the Commonwealth.
The new site, available at vcri.environment.virginia.edu, serves as a central hub for the Institute’s Virginia-focused climate research efforts, offering accessible insights, data, and tools to support decision-makers, researchers, and communities working toward a more sustainable future. The research highlighted on the site focuses on strategies to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In order for Virginia to get to net zero carbon emissions by 2050, various carbon dioxide removal strategies will be needed to address legacy pollution and keep the costs of climate action low for consumers and businesses.
Carbon removal can be as simple as preserving or extending forests or as complex as fostering bioenergy production and coupling that with carbon capture at the point of producing those biofuels. The research engaged a collaborative, interdisciplinary team to consider three elements of a carbon removal industry in Virginia: nature, technology, and policy.
“This new platform represents a major step forward in how we share climate research and drive action for the state,” said Leon Szeptycki, Associate Director of the UVA Environmental Institute. “By bringing together cutting-edge research, tools, and partnerships in one place, we are making it easier for communities and leaders across Virginia to access the insights they need to respond to climate change.”
The website showcases work aligned with the Institute’s broader efforts to develop scalable, evidence-based solutions to environmental challenges. These include strategies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, advancing carbon removal, and identifying pathways to a resilient, net-zero future.
