UVA’s President Jim Ryan sits down with Arun Majumdar, to discuss how our economy can achieve net zero carbon emissions and what policies can be implemented now to achieve that grand challenge. Welcoming remarks by Provost Magill and ERI Director McGlathery.

Dr. Arun Majumdar is the Jay Precourt Provostial Chair Professor at Stanford University, a faculty member of the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering He recently was the Chair of President Biden’s transition team for the Department of Energy. He previously served the Obama administration as the Founding Director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency – Energy (ARPA-E), the Acting Under Secretary of Energy, and as Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Energy. Before joining Stanford, he was the Vice President for Energy at Google. Dr. Majumdar is a member of the US National Academy of Sciences, US National Academy of Engineering, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Jim Ryan serves as the ninth president of the University of Virginia. A respected and accomplished educator and legal scholar, Ryan earned his law degree from UVA and previously served on the School of Law faculty for 15 years. From 2013 to 2018, he acted as dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education and the Charles William Eliot Professor of Education.
