The AI + Environment Research Interest Group (RIG) is an interdisciplinary community of UVA faculty exploring how artificial intelligence can be used to understand, manage, and mitigate environmental and climate challenges, and how these technologies themselves impact people, places, and the planet. This RIG brings together researchers working on everything from AI-driven climate modeling, biodiversity monitoring, and carbon accounting to the ethics, equity, and environmental costs of AI-related systems, data infrastructures, and emerging technologies.
RIGs provide a structured but low-burden way to connect with colleagues, spark collaborative ideas, and shape shared research agendas. Faculty from any department or research focus are welcome. Whether the work engages directly with environmental topics or intersects in creative, unexpected ways, all are welcome to participate.
RIG sessions are held monthly on Zoom, and each meeting explores actionable outcomes like seed funding proposals, team formation, and a joint research agenda. Attendees can expect short presentations, collaborative discussions, and lightly facilitated activities designed to discover shared interests and identify opportunities for working together.
AI + Environment RIG will meet on the third Monday of every month at 1:00 pm as follows:
- Sept 15
- Oct 20th
- Nov 17th
- Dec 15th
(Note that the same Zoom link is used for all RIG meetings.)
